Queen Rania A Vlogger

So Queen Rania of Jordan decided to become a Vlogger addressing the problem of stereotypes, in an attempt to reach out to the west and break down these stereotypes.

I believe it’s not unusual for the Queen to come up with such smart and creative initiatives of a huge impact. I personally think that stereotyping is one of the biggest problems and there’s no better way to solve the problem than getting the feedback directly from the ones who either create them or who fall for them. And technology never fails in such missions. It helps reach as much people as possible in a glimpse.

Now what I find interesting is that the replies to the video, are coming from people of different cultural, religious and educational backgrounds. So the opinions will vary and the interaction will hopefully be fruitful. What I find upsetting on the other hand is the fact that some of the replies are being offensive, attacking the idea and urging the Queen to address Jordanians rather than the west! to the ones who think this way I say: you seem to have no idea about the activities of the Queen and have no clue about what she’s already accomplished and what she’s still doing in this regard. And addressing the west is, in my humble opinion,  courageous, smart and promising. Civilization works inside out, it’s never a one-way thing. It’s never enough to address problems within a country, since the ones coming from outside do affect it and its people as well.

Another annoying thing I’ve noticed in the replies submitted, is that many of the repliers are trying to steer the whole debate towards Islam and the fact that it doesn’t respect or welcome an opinion that contradicts its teachings, leaving no room for debate; which is so untrue, and there’s a difference between a free debate that respects all opinions as long as they are within the circle of respect and understanding, and an offensive debate that has no goal but to attack and show disrespect and intolerance towards the debaters. Islam always encourages debates as long as they aim at understanding, respecting and tolerating each other.

I just wish that the video will open the door for a positive interaction. No matter how much one talks, if the other person is not willing to listen, there will be no point of arguing in the first place. Therefore I really hope that only interested individuals who are willing to argue politely and who are willing to give a chance to be replied to and discussed with, will participate in the debate. If you’re just looking for trouble and fights, please save the Queen your cyber violence.

Experimenting With Coffee

I’ve always had a problem with coffee. I truly consider myself addicted to coffee. A while ago I decided to get rid of this addiction, which I somehow managed to do, but huge amounts of tea had to replace the missing coffee doses… so if you think of it, caffeine always had a way to win!

The past couple of weeks were really rough. I had to do anything to keep myself awake and alert. Nothing could do the job better than a hot cup of coffee! so, yes, you guessed it, my coffee addiction’s back, but I welcomed it with open arms, and i believe, I might never be able to kiss it goodbye again!

The only problem is, when you have to stay awake, and when you consume a lot of coffee, you get bored quickly and you feel that you need a change. Since nothing really compares – to my taste buds that is- to the awakening smell of a hot cup of coffee, I wouldn’t change the taste to tea or any other drink, change has to be in the taste of coffee itself. So I’ve been experimenting with coffee, trying to create flavors I’ve never tasted before, or ones that I’ve once tasted but are no longer available for one reason or the other.

I’ve tried them all: vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon… you name it! but then I remembered that a few years ago I tasted one hell of a flavor in London, for which I went crazy: ginger-bread flavored coffee! hmmm, yummy, yummy! just mentioning its name makes my mouth water! I can still smell the ginger-kissed steam that came out of it! GOD IT WAS GOOD! anyway, long story short, since I have absolutely no idea on how to make such a thing, I just bought some ginger powder, mixed it with my coffee and sugar, poured on some hot milk, and voila! I had my own ginger-flavored coffee. Ok, I have to admit it’s not as good as the real thing but it was really good.

Actually I’m drinking a cup of my ginger flavored coffee as I speak, it’s too good that I can’t resist the smell of it … oops, here we go, spilled some coffee on my jeans while having a sniff, how nice, my own son is laughing at me!

Anyway, I know ginger is not favored by many, but when it comes to me, I believe ginger, combined with good coffee and hot milk creates the best flavor ever!

Brazilian Drawing For Gaza

Carlos Latuff is a Brazilian Cartoonist, who brilliantly uses his talent in creating artworks that serve important political, cultural and religious issues such as the occupation of Palestine, the war on Iraq, Islamophobia and many other issues.

I personally found his work to be really impressive, and thought I’d share some of his cartoons that are dedicated to call on the world to condemn the Israeli holocaust of Gaza.

More on Latuff’s work:

* Wakeup From Your Slumber.

* The People’s Voice.

Butchering Gaza

Definition of Massacre:

  1. the unnecessary, indiscriminate killing of a large number of human beings or animals, as in barbarous warfare or persecution or for revenge or plunder.
  2. a general slaughter, as of persons or animals: the massacre of millions during the war.

In Gaza:

Huge numbers of civilians of all ages are being killed and bombarded (not to forget detained), their homes destroyed, and their possessions all lost, families scattered, not to mention the siege that’s making their survival an impossible mission to begin with, let alone get brutally attacked… sounds like a massacre to me.

But as usual, there’s always a way to defend Israel’s attacks and turn the whole thing around and blame it on the Palestinian rockets (which do not compare to those of the Israelis neither in quantity nor in quality) but still they manage to be always the starters of all Israeli attacks that are launched just for revenge. But is that an excuse to go on killing and detaining civilians? is that an excuse to take away the rights of people to get aid and medical attention? till when are we going to allow homes to be bombarded and see schools exploding and trees uprooted because Israelis “DOUBTED” they could shelter attackers?

Now I don’t give a damn about all those stupid political facades both parties hide behind. I don’t care who’s in charge and who’s not, all I care about are human beings and their right to lead normal lives! We’re always asked to differentiate between Israeli civilians and the Israeli government, and we normally do, but no one seems to ask the same when it comes to Palestinians. Do not punish people in the name of their governments.

I really feel like shit, I’m so outraged, so upset and my heart is broken, my soul is filled with sadness to watch Gazans go through what they’re going through. I have my food, my medicine, my water, my electricity and my share of peace and I still can’t get over the injustice Gazans have to deal with… imagine how Gazans, who are out of everything -including hope- and who are helplessly watching each other die, how are they feeling at the moment.

I leave you with some photos that might help you picture how horrible it is in Gaza right now.

No matter how disgusting what the Gazans are going through actually is, what I find extremely repulsive is the reaction -or better say the ABSENCE of reaction- of Arabs. Yeah, our oil is affecting life expenses all around the world, yet we somehow fail to stop one thing we all agree is wrong, unfair, and awful.

    Too Good To Be… “False”

There’s nothing in this world I hate more than hypocrisy. I just can’t stand it!
I have no idea how people manage to smile at you, look you in the eye, and even hug or kiss you while they can’t stand the sight of you!

I’ve been through many situations, where I found myself surrounded with at least one hypocrite, who, in no time, managed to convert the rest of the people surrounding me into similar lying copies.
So in my opinion, there are 2 basic kinds of hypocrites, those who are hypocrites by nature, and those who are made hypocrites by those natural hypocrites. Let me explain.
There are those who, regardless of your own nature, would welcome you and show their happiness for knowing you and then stab you in the back in the first chance they get, for nothing you did wrong, just for the heck of it. These are hypocrites by nature. The other kind is the kind of people who believe what the first kind tells them, and act accordingly without giving you the privilege of showing what you’re made of. So even if they’re the sweetest people you know, even if they don’t usually hurt anyone, and sometimes even if they know how good a person you are, for some reason they’re weak when they’re in the company of the hypocrite-by-nature people and believe them so easily, maybe because the hypocrite-by-nature people are close to them, and are ones they’ve trusted their all life. So when they see you, they’d smile at you and welcome you but implicitly they’re planning ways to piss you off and make you pay for the lies told to them by the hypocrite-by-nature people.

Who’s worse? i believe the worst ever is the kind of people who know you, and know how good your intentions and acts are, but still insist on treating you as an evil person, even if you did nothing wrong to them or anyone they know, whether they belong to the first or second kind.

In the past, I dealt with hypocrisy in a self-destructive way. I used to get really sad, and mad, I had many sleepless nights trying to figure out why I’m being back-stabbed, or why do some people show me something then do something completely different, deliberately hurting me over and over again even though I never intended or did actually hurt them. On several occasions I’d turn to someone close and ask for support but I’d end up looking bad and many times I’d be considered the hypocrite, if not then I’d be at least called a whiny nagging silly person who feels all people are her enemy.
So there was a time when I’ve actually considered becoming a hypocrite myself, you know, “if you can’t beat them…”, but as the British novelist and playwright W. Somerset Maugham explains: “Hypocrisy is the most difficult and nerve-racking vice that any man can pursue; it needs an unceasing vigilance and a rare detachment of spirit. It cannot, like adultery or gluttony, be practiced at spare moments; it is a whole-time job”.
I can be extremely polite -which is often misunderstood as hypocrisy by the way- but I could not be two people at the same time. If I hate a person, I can tolerate them but I can’t act as if they’re so dear to me, and if there’s someone I love, I can never hurt them, at least not intentionally. So I pulled myself together and decided to deal with hypocrisy the best way I know, strength and ignorance. And now whenever someone hugs me tight when I know they’ve been talking negatively about me, or when someone gives me a big smile while giving me “hidden” and “indirect” comments to hurt my feelings or to point out something they know would annoy the hell out of me, I do get upset, but I take a deep breath, count to 10 and act as if I never really heard a thing… unless there was an insult of course that’s a different story ;)

Hypocrisy to me is the synonym of cruelty, indecency, intolerance, and insecurity. It’s a lie, a lie perfected in a way that it’s being believed at a certain point. All I can say is that nobody’s perfect, but you should always give any person a chance of expressing themselves and never judge by what others tell you.
As for the hypocrites out there, I leave you with Benjamin Franklin’s simple yet extremely useful quote: “Clean your finger, before you point at my spots.”

    You Are What You…?

I was reading “What Defines A Person?” and it got me really thinking of how we people sometimes refer to things that might be really insignificant, or better say shallow, and yet decide to make them the standards, through which we define other people we know.

MMM lists many arguments: some people are defined by what they think, or what they say or believe, or they’re defined by their religion… and I must agree with him that these are all unreliable standards. The closest to defining the real identity of people, as he mentions, is defining people by what they do, i.e. by their actions.

There’s another thing that I’ve always believed would tell you so much about a person. It wont necessarily define that person, but it will surely help knowing a lot about them… it’s food.  Can we say a person is what he eats? I believe yes we can, in a way. Now you must know that a person’s health condition, or physical shape, or skin condition, or a person’s stress levels, mental health or even criminal tendencies… are all things that could reflect what that person eats. But what if we look at it from a different angle? what if we try to have the choice of food reflect that person and define him, is that possible? let’s see…
The choice of food tells you a lot about a person’s taste, a person who knows good quality cooking, and to whom eating is a pleasure is a person with good taste, and is definitely different from a person who eats just to feed his hunger not bothering what the hell he’d throw in his stomach.

The choice of food also tells you a lot about that person’s financial situation; if he only eats in expensive restaurants or hotels it means he can afford it, but if he always chooses cheap places, that means he’s seriously on a tight budget.

The choice of food tells you a lot about a person’s personality. If he chooses always the same kind of food that means he’s the type who likes to play it safe, or he’s the classic kind of people. But if he tries new menus every time, it means he’s adventurous and daring.

Food can also tell you about the ethnic background, because, not always, but quite often, people would cook food they’re used to eat in their own countries or family homes, even when they’re abroad.

Another interesting thing food can help you know is religion, yeah, if the person eats no pork there’s a big chance he’s either a Muslim or a Jew! Food can also give you a glimpse about a person’s own beliefs/principals; if he’s vegetarian, or vegan then he strongly believes in animal rights ;)
You can know a bit about a person’s health condition by their choice of food. If he constantly avoids nuts, milk, flour-based dishes or any other ingredient, then he’s allergic to these ingredients. If he avoids fatty foods then he’s on diet, either for health-related reasons or just for staying fit ;) which brings me to the fact that food would tell you a lot about a person’s education, or nutrition-awareness. An educated person who’s well-informed about food would -usually- select a healthy meal that will nourish his body; while a poorly informed person;s selection of food would end up with a meal that will just stuff his stomach and most probably pile fat in his body and hurt his health!
So I believe yes, we certainly can know a lot about a person if we know what he eats…

    Dubai On Monopoly?

    UPDATE: NOMINATE AMMAN & TUNIS!

Only the most nominated cities would make it on the list of the “World Edition”. I already nominated the already listed 3 Arab cities thinking that any new nomination I would make would have no shot at making it on the list since there are only 8 days left for the voting to begin. But Khaled took a brave step and nominated Tunis, so I got all excited and nominated Tunis and Amman as well. It would be great if you guys showed some support ;) I know it’s just a game but the board would look really cooler with our beloved cities on it!
I’ve always enjoyed Monopoly, I really like the game and how it manages to gather members of the whole family around its colorful board for hours and hours!

And now the popular board game is introducing the “World Edition”, inviting online users to vote for cities that should appear on the board.
Many cities are nominated with a possibility to nominate new ones that are not already listed. Among the Arabic cities are Dubai, Cairo and Jerusalem… only these 3 cities? what a shame ;)
Residents of Dubai are being invited to vote for Dubai to appear on the new global edition of Monopoly.
I believe Dubai certainly deserves being listed, and people should vote for it.

But well, being the curious person I am, I had to check out what’s written in the description of each Arab city. And as usual it is admitted that Muslims reside Jerusalem besides Jews and Christians, BUT when it comes to religious significance of the city, it seems to be always limited to Jews, and Christians, completely ignoring Muslims.
The Monopoly site  pointed out the existence of Muslim residents but went on listing the Jewish and Christian holy sites, completely ignoring  Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is one of the holiest Muslim sites on the planet.

Call me whatever you want, but I believe that it’s because of such ignorance of Muslims’ historical and religious significance that many people around the globe don’t answer to our calls when Al-Aqsa Mosque is in danger of being totally and completely destroyed!

As I always say, Jerusalem is a holy city and includes the holiest sites for all three religions, but why should Muslims be completely left out?
