Musical Baton

Mo passed me this a while ago, but this whole Jordan trip thing made me postpone replying to it till now, so here are my answers 🙂

Total volume of music files on my computer:
Well, there are 2 computers:
At work: I can’t download or exchange songs, and there are limits to what I can upload, so now I have only: 300 MB
At home: which is basically my husband’s, and since he’s obsessed with music I don’t even want to think of what size his music files are 😀
The last CD I bought was:
Hanin’s latest Album.
Song playing right now:
none 😉
Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me:
1. 7ayra: Amrou Rafi.
2. Ba3dak ya hawa: Marwan Khouri.
3. I will survive.
4. Innocent Eyes: Delta Godrem
5. Leave Right now: Will Young

Five people to whom I’m passing the baton:
MMM, Eve, Roba, Rayhane, Drako.

For Tennis Lovers

Our friend Mo designed Tennis Tips, a fantastic site to teach you the fundamentals and right techniques of tennis.
The site is rich in video demonstrations as well as images and text instructions to take you step by step through the process of learning the game. So whether a visual learner or not, Tennis Tips will offer you a convenient learning method.
The site is wonderful, it’s very informative and user-friendly. Mo has put a lot of time, effort and experience in it for tennis lovers to enjoy, learn and improve.

My husband and I are already enjoying this project and can’t wait for our next Tennis match to apply what we’re learning 😉

Check it out guys, you’ll love it!

Rest In Peace…

Still can’t believe Ahmad Zaki’s dead!
His death, although somehow expected after a long struggle with cancer, yet it shocked millions of his fans…
Just came across a pic of his funeral, thank you for sharing Raynahe.

Death comes whenever, wherever, however it comes, no one can stop that. But we can all remember that we’re mortal, and our lives should serve one goal: making this world a better place to live.

Let’s all pray for his soul, inna lillah wa inna ilayhi raji’oun!

    The Tennis Dance ;)

The weather is perfect, sunny, slight cool breeze, calm… simply beautiful. Loads of work to do, got used to that, so there’s actually no problem. The only thing annoying me is the pain I feel in my legs, wrest and arm.

Yesterday, my husband and I decided to put an end to our lazy lifestyle, which –thanks to him and the weird weather- we’ve been sticking to for a long long time 😀 So we decided to go out for a friendly tennis match. Taken by the beauty of the place and the adorable weather, we forgot all about our lazy muscles that should be warmed up gradually, and started our match right away. Our match, which –at times- couldn’t have been more aggressive, lol!
MMM was hitting as strong and fast as possible, throwing the ball high up in the sky making me suffer to catch it! But the revengeful me did all the unprofessional, so unfriendly, so bad-mannered-tennis-player tactics hitting the ball in the opposite corners of where MMM is standing making him run across the whole court 😛 soon enough he started using the same tactic, then we got back to our peaceful selves, playing a decent game.
A short while later, I got in this hysterical state, laughing my head off every time one of us misses the ball. Later on, I got this really stupid reaction: fear! So instead of hitting back the ball, I either ran away from it, or twisted around it, or –when the ball is high- I’d lean back to escape it… and believe me there were times when I looked as if I were ballet-dancing rather than playing… ah I was terrible.
In the final stage, I got really really hungry, started picturing French fries, and fatty food, cold coke…etc. Then I was too tired to chase the ball or gather the ones spread all over the place. And before we knew it, our time was over, we went home fresh, happy, active, and things were great.
Today I’m in pain and feel lazier than ever 😛

But who cares, it was real fun 🙂

To Whom It May Concern In Jordan’s Music Sector

The other day I read a post written by our friend Hind Sabanekh about her need to buy a new Trumpet. After exchanging some comments, I was shocked to realize the fact that music students in Jordan are required to buy instruments (professional ones) and are expected to simply get these instruments no matter how much they cost!
Another shocking fact is that many kinds of professional music instruments are not available in the Jordanian market, so the students MUST find a way to get these instruments from abroad, again, regardless of the high price.

I couldn’t actually know all this and keep my mouth shut, I had to do anything, even if I don’t succeed in solving the problem right away. But I know that one day things will be different, in a positive way, if we all want them to change.

I’m writing this post to address all responsible people in the music sector in Jordan, let them be teachers, music store owners, music instrument manufacturers, trade marks’ dealers, and most important of all, music students.
Music industry and education have grown a big deal in Jordan within the past few years, but we can’t expect talents to rise, and music to bloom more and more when the basic elements are not available, and when students and institutions are lacking support.
We have qualified people who can manufacture musical instruments locally, and therefore offer instruments for lower prices. But even if we claim Jordan lacks skilled people to manufacture instruments, why don’t we send some promising people for courses and invest in their skills to come back to Jordan ready to produce best quality of instruments! Or why don’t we hire a foreign supervisor to train them!
If there are complications I’m not aware of to locally manufacture instruments, then why don’t music institutions and universities make some kind of purchasing agreements with music stores, asking them to provide ALL the needed music instruments for some percent off specially for students, or if low prices will create problems for the sellers –although they shouldn’t coz they’ll sell more and increase their revenue- then why not facilitate the purchase by giving the students the chance to pay small amounts per month for example!!

I really hope some responsible would read this and consider helping in any way, but hoping is never enough, so I ask all music students to write an official request to their teachers and suggest the above points or any other way they think of to help them get the required instruments for affordable prices.
Just give it a try, you have nothing to lose! If nothing works, then at least the ones asking you to get extremely expensive professional instruments will stop nagging on you and will finally leave you in peace!

Actually the music instrument supplies problem is also present in other forms, like the lack of good affordable educational books, but at least in this case, photocopying a book may cut the expenses, but in the case of the instruments I guess a big step should be taken if we want the Jordanian youth to go for their music passions with no fears, we don’t want them to give up their dreams for financial problems, do we!

New “Round The World Sailing” Record

British sailor Ellen MacArthur sealed her place in sailing’s pantheon by breaking the solo round-the-world record, a fantastic feat that establishes her as arguably the greatest sailor Britain has ever produced.
Ellen MacArthur will arrive back in Britain today after sailing solo around the world in record time. She crossed the finish line at 2229 GMT on Monday, completing her 27,348-mile voyage in 71 days 14 hours 18 minutes and 33 seconds. That time meant she smashed the previous mark, set in 2004 by Frenchman Francis Joyon, by nearly 33 hours. Apart from breaking the remarkable time set by Frenchman Francis Joyon last year, MacArthur is only the second person ever to sail solo non-stop around the world on a multi-hull boat.
Crowds have gathered in Falmouth and along the coast to welcome her home.
And tributes have already been pouring in from fellow sailors, fans and other public figures.
You can follow the highs and lows of Ellen MacArthur’s historic round-the-world sailing record with this animated guide.

    Swimming To The Top…

Maria Asfoura, a thirteen-year-old Palestinian swimmer from Bethlehem, is an example of the Palestinian persistence in proving real talent and achieving success regardless of all difficulties.
She is a living proof that Palestinians are strong and ambitious people who will let nothing stand in their way, not even occupation.
Her dream is to raise the Palestinian flag at the 2008 Olympic Games in China.

Her journey began at the age of six when Maria’s swimming instructor recognized her natural gift and encouraged her to enroll in the De La Salle sports club in Bethlehem. With the encouragement of her trainer at the club, Musa Nawawreh, and her parents she developed quickly. In her first race in Ramallah, she received a gold medal and that really encouraged her to work even harder.
Considered the best Palestinian swimmer her age, Maria specializes in the freestyle and butterfly strokes at 50 and 100 meters. She has competed well in China, Germany, Jordan and Algeria and her trophy case proves it, with her 31 gold medals and 30 some silver and bronze medals. Maria has also traveled to Greece to be with the Palestine team at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, to show her support.
And since it’s sometimes hard to balance school and swimming, Maria gets a lot of support from her teachers who often visit her at home on weekends to tutor her for classes that she has missed. The Israeli occupation presents its fair share of challenges as well. Born to Palestinian parents in Colombia, Maria is able to travel on her El Salvadorian passport to leave Palestine through Jordan. Otherwise, it would be much more difficult to receive permission to leave through Jordan. “When I travel I see the difference; what it’s like not to live under occupation” she notes. Maria finds comfort when other athletes at competitions abroad express their solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for freedom. In Greece and Algeria she and other Palestinian athletes were even asked for their autographs.
Maria is now training for next summer’s World Championships in Montréal, Canada. The challenge of proving herself on the world stage is something Maria looks forward to.
“Although we have to struggle for freedom, we also have to keep working and training” Maria says.

We wish you the best of luck Maria, hoping your dream will come true and we’ll see Palestine’s flag raised high up in the sky reaching out for millions of people in the Olympics and wherever you and other Palestinian athletes go.
We are so proud of you…

    Bravo Arabic Music Channels

    Via: mahjoob.com
P.s. Click on the cartoon for enlargement.
I’ve been in a state of shock, disgust and shame ever since these new so called video-clips have been showing on our Arab satellite music channels promoting cheap meanings and extremely inappropriate social “values”.
Naked bodies of both women and men; very rude facial expressions that include animalistic licking, lip biting; explicit erotic body movements such as crawling, touching, and last but not least: stripping! Not to forget the unbelievably low class and provocative lyrics that express sick mentalities and cheap environment!

People like Maria, Aziz Abdu, Bussi Samir, Gharam, Jad Shweiri, Marwa, Najla, and many others that I lost hope in memorizing their names, are nothing but a disgrace to any society that respects human dignity.
Actually one of them: Jad Shweiri, has really good taste in music, and has talent in directing, but unfortunately he’s going down with his video-clip themes, and if he goes on that way, he’ll never make it to success.
Other than him, I find others to lack even the basic elements of art. They’re SO BAD! But thinking of it seriously, one gets to an even worse fact: these people are selected and hosted by satellite music channelswhich pick the artist and await the reaction of the viewers. And when the viewers enjoy such cheap work and encourage the talent-lacking individuals, then why would channels stop showing them as long as they’re gaining the maximum profit?!!
Yes, unfortunately TV channels don’t care about the quality of work represented, they have only one main concern: quantity of money coming in.
And after all, those so called artists are nothing but people who come from our societies, which leads us to the worst conclusion: it’s us the friends, the families, the teachers, the employers and the consultants who make these shameful schemes!

I don’t think anyone raised well, anyone surrounded with mature caring friends would ever consider showing off their body in this humiliating way, or lay naked with nothing but a piece of cloth surrounding their butts!
I don’t think anyone who’s got a helping hand and someone to listen would ever consider rubbing their half-naked bodies against the wall, or bathe almost naked in the middle of the desert.I don’t think any responsible person would ever allow a girl -who’s good at nothing but licking lollipops and showing her breasts- to be shown on their channels to be an “idol” to all teenage students encouraging them to go to school looking for sexual relationships and scandals, rather than education!
I don’t believe any sane person would ever allow really wrong lyrics to be sung in front of millions of people, calling for the satisfaction of animal instincts and sexual desires!
This is nonsense! And I must admit the Arab music channels have gone where no other channels have been!
Congratulations for spoiling the young generations, thank you for misleading everyone, because of you, non-Arab cultures think we’re good at nothing but sex, shaking butts and getting naked!
Media is responsibility, and seems you get this fact pretty good! Well done!

    Father & Son Single

Last night I had the chance to watch the video clip of Ronan Keating’s single: Father & Son Featuring Yusuf Islam.
I know it was released in December, but I only saw it last night and I must say it was BEAUTIFUL! I was so touched to see Yusuf Islam singing his song with Ronan Keating. It sounded out of this world.
I’ve always loved and admired Yusuf Islam as a singer and a person, and I just love the voice and respectful style of Ronan. Both made an incredible appearance that gave the song a whole new depth.
It was really touching! I LOVED IT!
Here is an interview with the great Yusuf Islam about the single and his appearance in Ronan Keating’s video clip.
And this is Yusuf Islam’s website. A great website that reveals the talent and the heart of Yusuf Islam, the singer, and the person…
