If Americans Knew…

Washington Report, December 2004
Heroism in the Holy Land: Americans Beaten for Walking Children to School
By Alison Weir

Chris Brown and Kim Lamberty are volunteers with an organization called Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT), which provides nonviolent intercession in areas of violence. They serve in the West Bank city of Hebron, where Palestinian civilians are frequently attacked and harassed by Israeli settlers. The presence of such international witnesses often reduces this violence.
On Wednesday morning [Sept. 29], Chris & Kim were walking children to school. These children were scared that adults would physically try to attack them.Part of the way Kim and two of the children had gotten a little ahead and were just turning a bend in the road, when Chris saw them suddenly stop and begin running back, screaming.
“I saw men with black masks on, dressed all in black, wielding chains, one carrying a bat, most of them wearing black.” Chris said. As the five men rushed at them, Chris called out, “Please don’t hurt the children, please don’t hurt the children.” The men smashed a rock to his head, knocking him to the ground, and began beating and kicking him with steel-toed boots.
“Why are you doing this? All we’re doing is walking children to school,we’re nonviolent,” Chris told them. “We’re Americans.” Kim, meanwhile, lay face down, not moving as the men kicked and beat her. She says: “It’s almost like for a moment you leave reality.I just remember thinking, ‘If I just lie here like I’m unconscious, maybe they’ll leave me alone.'”
While the BBC, Agence France-Presse, Israeli newspapers and a wide variety of other international media reported this attack on American citizens immediately, the Associated Press, inexplicably, sent out no report on it for a day and a half, and this only after numerous people had called complaining.
Israeli forces and settlers are not gentle in their treatment of peace activists. In June 2001, Israeli peace activist Neta Golan joined Palestinian villagers in a nonviolent march. An Israeli soldier twisted her arm until it snapped. In March 2003, Rachel Corrie, 23, participated in a tiny sit-in to prevent a Palestinian home from being demolished. An Israeli military bulldozer two stories high crushed her to death. Two weeks later, Tom Hurndall, 21, tried to help Palestinian children get away from Israeli gunfire. An Israeli sniper shot him in the head.
Chris feels that Americans have an intimate connection to this carnage, because it is American tax money to Israel that is fueling the violence. While most Americans are unaware of this connection, studies show that news media rarely report it.The fact is that U.S. taxpayers give Israel over $10 million per day, far more than to any other nation on earth.
Yet the need for the world to do something has continued to grow. While Americans are well informed about the tragic deaths of Israeli children, very few realize that approximately six times more Palestinian children have been killed, and that their deaths occurred first. Most Americans have little awareness of these facts, because so little of all this is reported in the American media.
Here’s an eye-opener: If Americans Knew!

Hi, I’m Richard Gere!

A video image shows U.S. actor Richard Gere showing his support in a television advert for a pro-peace group to help persuade Palestinians to vote in their upcoming presidential elections is this grab taken January 4, 2005.“Hi, I’m Richard Gere and I’m speaking for the entire world. We’re with you during this election time. It’s really important. Get out and vote,” Source: Reuters

Some welcome and appreciate Gere’s support, considering his participation a great gesture that will encourage many Palestinians to take part in the elections. While some others look at it as another “American” attempt to interfere in their own actions and interests!
I personally believe all Palestinians should play a positive role in their own elections regardless of the occupation and suffering. They should let nothing get in their way.
Good Luck Palestine, and hold on Palestinians!

    Work Diaries (15) : a new start, 2005 style

Since I’ve been so unhappy with the work pressure I had last year, specially the last couple of months of 2004, I thought I’ll begin this year with a mean work personality. I wont accept more work. I wont allow myself to stay for extra hours, and I will NOT accept my boss doing nothing all day long and then rushing me in the last few minutes to do something “urgent” keeping me late at work!
    Yep, I’m, DETERMINED!

Yesterday we had a deadline for a very important client. We’ve been working since December. But we’ve been waiting for some documents and research results. We got the results and documents yesterday morning. We could’ve ended everything by 12 p.m., but NO, he kept wasting time, and every time I remind him of the deadline, he says: everything’s done. Just a matter of ordering the files. This wont take much time, so we’ll do it after lunch.

    At 2:00 p.m.
I: so should we finish this nightmare?
Boss: (looks at his watch) Oh, why rush things, I’ll let you know when exactly.

    At 3:00 p.m.
I: Sir, time is passing by, why don’t we get this done and relax?
Boss: Why do you worry so much?! Anyway, I have to go to a client meeting will be back soon.

    At 4:00 p.m.
My boss is not back yet.

    At 4:30 p.m.
He’s still out. I call him, his mobile is off.

    At 4:55
    The phone rings.
    I: Eman speaking.
Boss: Don’t leave, I’m on my way. I forgot all about the deadline. Why didn’t you remind me?
I: I called you but your mobile was off, you always do that in meetings.

    At 5:10
    He finally arrives.
Boss: don’t worry, 5 minutes maximum and the nightmare will end.

    At 5:15
Boss: (while revising the requirements of the client) SHIT! I totally forgot about this section.

Knowing that the whole section will need at least an hour to be done,I was SO DETERMINED to tell him it was his fault that he wasted time and that I had to leave for an urgent appointment. I didn’t want him to go on keeping me extra hours when we could’ve done everything on time without the need to rush.

Boss: Ok Eman, let’s do this.
    I: Sure Sir…

Jordan Bans The Use Of PetCoke

The Environment Ministry in Jordan decided to prevent the Jordan Cement Factories Company from using petcoke in cement production. The Jordan Cement Factories Company decided to use petcoke as a cheaper substitute for fuel oil to increase its production of cement. Petcoke, considered a cheap source of energy, is made from petrol residues and contains heavy metals such as lead, nickel and mercury.
Local environmentalists say the use of petcoke causes respiratory allergies and cancer, while its environmental consequences include acid rain that will destroy the environment.

I know many Fuheis residents who were constantly complaining about the cement factory and its negative effect on their health and their land and were protesting against the use of such toxics. I’m truly happy such a step was taken to improve the environmental situation in Fuheis. Fuheis is one of the nicest places in Jordan…

    Lesson Of The Day

“We meet people who are ready to do anything to please us and be close to us, but we can’t stand even their sight. While there are ones who spare no effort to hurt us and waste no chance to stab us in the back, and we’re at their feet just to win their approval!” — A Client

KindHearts: As Eid Al Adha Approaches…

The Holy Muslim Eid Al Adha is on the way. And since the main concern of this occasion is providing food for the poor, I wanted to encourage all Muslims to help the victims of war and natural disasters.

KindHearts is a non-profit charitable organization providing immediate disaster relief and establishing programs to improve the quality of life and foster future independence for those in need.
This year, and on the occasion of Eid Al Adha, KindHearts is focusing on sending donations to aid the victims of Tsunami.

I personally think this is a wonderful way and a perfect time to help our brothers and sisters all around the world. One should stop being self-centered and must care about others and help them in any possible way.

Revive the spirit of Islam and support people in need, to help them survive and to let them know, they’re thought of and remembered…

Schools Close Due To Pollution In Tehran

One of the responsible people in the Iranian Environment Protection Organization has announced Saturday, January the 1st, the decision to close Schools and Nurseries in Tehran due to the high percentage of air pollution! They will be closed till further notice.

According to the expectations of the Weather Forecasting Association, carbon level is above normal average, which causes higher air pollution and threatens the health of the citizens.

More than 12 Million people live in Tehran, and around 2 million cars –mostly very old and in need of maintenance- are used there on daily basis, which explains the high percentages of air pollution over there.

At This Time Of The Year

So, few more hours and we’ll be starting a brand new year.
As usual, most of us start thinking. Thinking of the past year, thinking of the coming year. Wondering what was the best of last year. Regretting the wrongs we did. Calculating the many goals we’ve missed. Being excited about what the new year has to offer us. Or maybe being a bit scared of what it would throw our way.

Many would go over their sweet-memory album. Pick the photos of those they lost, hang it over their beds, and drop millions of tears to warm up their empty homes.

Many would pick the photos of those who are away, hug them tight, smile for a moment, and then cry for hours, wishing things weren’t the same, hoping the pictures were flesh and blood, and that the world was too small, that no matter how far their loved ones would go, they can still see them from a distance.

Many would pick the photos of the little new members added to them. Such photos always help refresh the memory of the time they were kids, when their parents took pics of them at that age. And then they’ll start picturing this peaceful little baby as he grows, and wonder if they’ll be still there to see the pic of his new born son.

Many would pick the photos of things they possess. Things they like. Mom’s vase, grandpa’s chair, uncle’s frame, wedding ring, first anniversary’s pic, 18th birthday watch.
Many others would draw pictures of things they wish to have, and then an old dried up red rose falls from the book on the table. A rose given to them by someone they once loved. A painful flashback of their memory haunts them. If they were the heart-breakers, they’ll grab the rose and cry this (X) a river. If they were the heartbroken, they’ll grab the rose, smell it, put it back with a smile, maybe a tear. They’re still in love… or they decide to throw it out the window. They got over their old love. Now the rose will fall in the hands of someone new, to light their lives with love, or to break their hearts too.

And many would pick their albums, look in, look again, and again, and again, nothing. No pics. Not a single picture, because there are no memories in the first place. They wasted their lives doing the wrong kind of thing. They spent their time with the wrong kind of people. All they cared about was the joy of the moment. They didn’t expect their life will fly by that fast, they never expected to become weak one day. They never thought a day will come when they’re left all alone, not even an album to capture their wasted moments.

At the end of each year, and the start of a new one, many will try to put some goals. Many will just enjoy the clock ticking 12 in the place they’ve been planning to be at many many weeks ago.

Many will witness a big change, many wont. Many will work hard to become better, and many will become lazy and silly enough to become worse.

In the brand new year, many will decide to have a brand new life but still, in the brand new year, many will choose to repeat their old same life.

Let’s all look for change, fruitful change. Let’s all put goals, constructive ones, and let’s work hard to reach them.
Start your new year with a prayer to God. Begin your new year with a smile, and be sure to draw a smile on someone else’s face.
Begin your new year with a brand new high spirit. Be a peaceful soul that aims at helping others. Try to make a positive change in this crazy world. Because you can’t change the world, but you can change yourself, and that makes the whole difference.

Happy New Year 2005 Everybody! May God bless us all, and may HE grant us good health, happiness and good company.
