A Journey In Preserving The Palestinian Identity

null
Established 1979, El-Funoun Palestinian Popular Dance Troupe aimed at reviving Palestinian music and dance folklore as a part of the national identity.
They succeeded in preserving old songs and dances, such as the “dabke,” a traditional dance form popular among Arabs of the Middle East, using traditional Arab instruments like oud, nai, and tabla.

A very interesting paragraph related to El-Funoun on This Week In Palestine caught my attention: “At the time, Israeli leaders liked to think and to publicly announce that Palestinians did not exist as a nation; and, to fulfill the prophecy, they attempted to destroy and/or confiscate the indigenous Palestinian culture, heritage, tradition, history and identity, if not explicitly then through convoluted schemes and arbitrary “laws.” Flight attendants on board Israel’s airline El Al were issued Palestinian embroidered costumes; the golden Dome of the Rock was prominently flashed on every Israeli travel brochure; hummus and falafel were served as traditional Israeli cuisine; a myriad of Arab-Palestinian slang expressions entered the Israeli idiom as native talk; and of course the colors of the Palestinian flag were not allowed to be combined in any shape or form, even on a painting. Any slight assertion of Palestinian identity was severely punished”.
I’m so happy that El-Funoun never gave up and kept fighting to protect the Palestinian Identity from fading away despite all the difficulties they faced from the occupation, which did not spare any effort in holding them back.

To counter the marginalization and alienation of Palestinian children and youth through music and dance expression, El-Funoun decided to form the Youth Troupe(Bara’em):

25 dancers (both females and males) aged 8 – 15 are carefully selected by El-Funoun choreographers according to their artistic talent and promising devotion to learn and develop.

I must say I am so proud of El-Funoun, and I truly wish them the best of luck to continue their great mission in preserving and promoting the Palestinian Identity.

For more information about El-Funoun, their contacts, their photo gallery, their video clips, and much more, visit their -breathtaking- official website which is available in both Arabic and English.

    Lesson Of The Day

“ There’s a cure, either psychological or medical, for every addiction except for internet-addiction. I tell my kids: get over it by practicing your hobbies, they say: but surfing the net is a hobby. I tell them: don’t waste your time, go learn something. They reply: daddy, internet is knowledge we learn everything online. I tell them: this will ruin your social life, go meet friends, talk to people, they say: but daddy, we made new friends through the net, and we can chat with millions of people forever. I tell them go buy yourself something nice and get yourself busy, they say: don’t be ridiculous dad, we can buy whatever we like online and internet is keeping us busy. I tell them: ok, I can’t keep up with bills, they say: no problem dad, we can find an online job, or we can cut expenses by going to our friends’ place! I tell them: kids, your glasses are becoming thicker and thicker, your health is getting worse, they smile and say: get us more vitamins!
Nothing beats internet-addiction. I wonder whether any caring father, or loving mother, or internet-addiction-free scientist would ever consider inventing anti-internet pills before they get me addicted as well”

    Stella Awards

    • English for the curious 🙂
The Stella Awards were inspired by Stella Liebeck. In 1992, Stella, then 79, spilled a cup of McDonald’s coffee onto her lap, burning herself. A New Mexico jury awarded her $2.9 million in damages. Ever since, the name “Stella Award” has been applied to any wild, outrageous, or ridiculous lawsuits. This is the official website: True Stella Awards, where you can find the cases, and the winners of past years.
The winners of the 2004 Stella Awards are available here. You better take a look, they’re really weird and the cases are sometimes even stupid 😀

    UNFAIR!

Today I went to the bank (one of the prestigious yet highly complicated in procedures) to check some work-related documents. The place was full, I had to wait for my turn. I was lucky enough to find a chair next to the cash-distributing ladies. There were two long queues, and although it’s not a habit of mine to stare at people while they withdraw money, yet my place forced me to at least overhear what’s going on.
While I was trying to keep myself busy checking some papers, I heard a guy begging the counter lady to allow him to withdraw more than the maximum limit for an emergency.

Lady: Can’t you see you’ve got only 100 Dinars left in your account? You can’t withdraw the whole amount!
Guy: Believe me it’s an emergency, I’ve been dealing with this bank for 3 years, never done anything wrong, I will put in some money as soon as possible, you should trust me.
Lady: Sorry, rules are rules, can’t do anything to help you.
Guy: Ok, let me talk to the manager and I’ll sign any kind of guarantee, I just need the money, it’s highly urgent!
Lady: Sorry, the boss does not involve himself in such issues.
Guy: Please, help me, I’m ready to do anything, anything at all…
    Lady: Next please…

AT THE SAME TIME IN THE QUEUE NEXT TO IT
Man: I need to withdraw 2500 Dinars.
Lady2: your account has only 2300 Sir, you’ve been using your credit card a lot lately.
Man: Oh, I gave it to my wife to do some shopping, that explains everything.
Lady2: so how much would you like to withdraw?
Man: I guess I have no choice but withdraw the whole amount, you see I wanna buy stuff, really good quality.
Lady2: But you know our rules Sir, there should be…
Man: Seems like you don’t know who I am!
Lady2: You’ve been our client for 1 year, I know
Man: I can make you lose your job if I like, where is your manager?
(the lady calls the manager, he comes down, gets an explanation)
Manager: he wanted the whole amount you give it to him, you don’t even think twice about it.
Lady2: But the guarantees, our rules boss!!
Manager: They are not made for him. He’s a VIP. (he looks at the man) Ok Sir, you can go now, no worries about filling your account, consider this bank your own…

The guy in the next queue decided to benefit from the presence of the manager, he runs to him and explains the situation, the manager replies:if someone told you this bank is a charity institution, someone has made a BIG MISTAKE! Get out of the way son…

    THE “Examiner” Pulls Offensive Ad.

On Jan. 27th, the Examiner pulled the offensive advertisement it published earlier this month.

The Examiner: “It has been brought to our attention that a recent advertisement published in Media Week promoting The Examiner has caused concern and offence to readers. On behalf of Clarity Media Group and The Examiner in Washington and San Francisco, we sincerely apologize. Clarity Media will immediately remove this advertisement from their campaign and new artwork will be used for the remaining duration of the marketing program.”

I really respect their positive response and congratulate them on caring for the opinion of their readers.
Hoping that all news agencies and media sources will always investigate every issue they choose to publish to always guarantee the credibility of their agencies and win the satisfaction of their worldwide readers.

    BABA 2004

Well, as all participants probably know by now, the voting in BABA 2004 has been stopped due to some irresponsible actions of some irresponsible individuals.

I would like to thank our friend Haitham and Mahmood for creating the FIRST Arab Blogger Awards EVER! What happened does not make their efforts less, and does not mean they failed in any way.
It’s enough to point out that they have united an unbelievable number of Arab Bloggers, ones I never heard of, and ones that really deserve being known.

Actually, the taste of winning is great, I can’t deny that, but I never focused on that when I’m nominated in any awards, I’ve always looked for new people, wanted to know how other bloggers of other cultures think, what topics concern them, and things like that, because that’s what interests me in blogging, this is why I created this blog in the first place, I never created it to enter competitions. Knowledge, opening more doors to new blogospheres is what I consider the real profit… that’s why I believe BABA 2004, was a success.

Again, thank you Haitham and Mahmood for BABA 2004, looking forward to BABA for the years to come. And last but not least, my deepest appreciation to all those who voted for me in any category 🙂

    Racial Problems In France

This is a great article I found at Bouillabaisse. The article was written by “WhyNot” of Pourquoi Pas? in response to an ongoing conversation concerning rampant racism in France. The article has a very interesting discussion that includes both Muslims & Arabs and Jews. I chose to only post the part about Jews, because of space. To read the whole article- which I highly recommend- click here

“Just recently, I yet again came across articles/blogs inferring France is the dark pit of anti-semite sentiments.

    Jews
Only 3 hours ago, on the 8pm national news, we saw the inauguration of a monument, right in the heart of Paris, in commemoration of the holocaust. A Great Wall of Names of French Jews deported during the war, some 76 thousand names, carefully researched by historians to avoid painful mistakes – not such an easy task in the midst of people whose identity papers disappeared and whose bodies went in smoke, literally.
    Anyway, more to the point:
Whereas I can observe a subjacent anti-arab feeling at the grass root level in this country, even if unspoken, it is obvious that there is no such anti-jew/anti-semite sentiment equivalent. It is pure fiction. It exists NOT.

Of course, there are nutcases around, like everywhere else. Whether caucasians or arabs, there are a few psycopaths who will scream for the death of every jew on this planet. What’s new? Same with nutcase jews who scream for the death of every palestinian. And so on. Take you pick.

The reality though is that claiming there is a rampant & wide-spread anti-jew sentiment here is not only bullshit, it’s actually ridiculous. Anyone who would like to spend 6 months here would realize it. It simply doesn’t make sense. One of the reasons is simply that to the average French caucasian, nothing differentiates a jew from a caucasian. Furthermore, jews who practice their religion do it here in a very private manner. Half the staff at my work place could be practising Jews and I wouldn’t have a fuckin’ clue, nor would anyone else.

And lastly, for those religious paranoiacs, religion in France is all but dead. Nobody gives a fuck about what religion you belong to. The only thing ppl care about is the preservation of a secular system by which anyone can practice any religion they want so long as they don’t try to shove it down other ppl’s throats. The still overwhelming *christian/catholic* population is so reserved and private about their *religiousness* that once again, you’d be hard pressed to know, even after working for 5 years with a colleague, whether (s)he is catholic or atheist.

And so a *possible* religious motive for anti-semite sentiment clearly does not stand to reason. Religion conflicts here are a thing of the past, thank goodness. Religious-based hatred of other ppl, let alone entire sections of the population, is pure fiction. Chritians fanatics are as rare as hen’s teeth. So are Jewish ones (Jewish in the religious sense). Muslim fanatics are also a very tiny minority even if they get very vocal.

    Bullshit headline news
A few months ago, France got the world media focus, mostly thanks to the US mass media always in search of a good French-bashing story. It was about the jewish cemeteries desecrated in Alsace, region north east of the country, right next to Germany. Oh boy, what a brouhaha there was. Even asshole Sharon made his grand ignorant speech calling for all French Jews to urgently go home to Israel as if their lives were on the line.

Strangely enough there was no international coverage on the fact that as many catholic and muslim cemeteries were also desecrated. And when, just recently, the investigations at last bore their fruits and found that in all cases, it wasn’t at all a case of *broad* anti-jew sentiment born by either caucasions nor arabs, but in fact the product of a handful of neo-nazi youths, then the entire world media was silent about it.”
